Chronic pain personally impacted my life...

Growing up I was no stranger to the impact of someone being thought of as 'crazy' because they didn't have a 'physical cause' for pain.

For years my mother had migraines that were so debilitating she would be hospitalized for dehydration. I would sit by her side and watch the nurses roll their eyes when she was in agony and needed more comfort.

Her migraines finally went away after her therapist did hypnosis with her and taught her self hypnosis. But that wasn't the end of this pain journey. 

In 1989 she hurt her back. After school I went to the hospital to see her and she was in agony. Screaming.

She had the worst headache of her life. I went to the nurses' desk and there was a physician there. He heard me tell the nurses this is not my mother, that something was very wrong.

She was not his patient, but he reviewed her chart. As a part of her treatment they had done a spinal tap. He sat her on the bed, watched her reaction and instantly said 'I know what's wrong with you. Will you let me call anesthesia to help you?'

She said yes and after a simple procedure she was pain free after an hour.

All it took was someone listening. I've never forgotten the experiences that she had. Without consciously knowing, that same compassion and understanding showed up in my nursing and anesthesia career.

Who Am I & Why Should You Listen To Me?

Hey there, I’m Penny.

As I mentioned above I was no stranger to pain growing up. My quest to alleviate suffering didn't end with standing up for my mother.

In 1994 I became a critical care nurse, moved to Connecticut and worked in the open heart center of  a large teaching hospital. After several years there I pursued my dream of going into nurse anesthesia.

Once I became a nurse anesthetist, I was at a small hospital where a 'never event' occurred on one of the units.

I realized I had a wealth of knowledge on how to safely take care of patients experiencing pain that I was never taught as a nurse.

So I began to create a course for nurses.

In that research I had to address the elephant in the room.

What do you do to help the patient if they are too sedate to safely receive strong medications?

That is when I uncovered the body of evidence for hypnosis. Don't roll your eyes at me! I thought the same thing at first.

Then I realized there were hundreds and hudreds of studies. PROOF the mind can control whether or not we experience pain.

At first I didn't do anything with the information other than I remembered that was how my mother got rid of her migraines.

But then something happened.

I came across a hypnosis training led by another nurse anesthetist. In 2013 I took that training. I was the poor schmuck he called up to hypnotize and demonstrate glove analgesia.

Long story short he clamped a surgical clamp shut on the back of my hand and because he had given me hypnotic suggestions that my hand would be numb, I didn't feel a thing.

Then he introduced epigenetics and how we can manipulate the stress response (which is based on REAL science I learned in my Masters program).

Before that day I had no intentions of actually practicing hypnosis.

My heart wouldn't let me keep the power of the mind to block pain a secret.

I went home, opened up a practice and began seeing referrals from the surgeons I worked with on the weekends.

The more I learned about the brain, epigenetic and the role of our thoughts and emotions on the stress response I couldn't understand why we don't talk about this more!

Over time, as I worked with more and more clients I came up with a systematic way of helping them find comfort, focus and energy. This led to a mind-body approach.

With fibromyalgia the more I researched, the more I found it was essential to look at many factors that have an impact on the fight or flight response in the body.

With all of the confusion and frustration in the Fibro Warrior community, I could no longer sit on this information.

That's when I wrote Breaking the Fibro Code. It has everything that impacts your healing and comfort your doctors are either too busy share,  or are no longer taught.

In 2019 I left anesthesia and nursing to go full time in helping others create better lives from the inside out.
